Day 6 – On the Road via Middle Earth

So today we hit the road and it was sad to say goodbye to Chris, Manni and the gorgeous little Reilly for 9 days but we will be back to see them again next week. Off we go into the city only things didnt quite go to plan with the car. Turns out we have been given an old banger and due to us not being able to hang around to argue the toss we have had to accept it. A disappointing start but ill take this up with them after the trip and im not letting it spoil things.

Another change was to our itinerary as the big Tongariro crossing volcano walk has had to be cancelled due to bad weather. This means though that we get to take in a few other attractions. The first of these was the Hobbiton Movie Set tour. Now although i liked the Hobbit a bit im no fan of Lord of the Rings but this tour was actually very good. At £42 per person its a bit expensive if im honest but i guess if you’re a big fan then its worth every penny. The tour starts with a bus ride through the fields and hills where the filming took place and then ends up at the location of the actual set used in the films. The guide walked us around the houses and props giving us an insight into how things were filmed and pointing out the scenes shot at various points. I have to say its a fairly impressive location and a great tour. Something i think you have to do if you come to New Zealand. The tour ends with a walk down to the Green Dragon pub, which is a replica due to it being burnt down in the films, where we are given a complimentary beer.

After leaving Hobbiton we then got back in the car and made our way down to Rotorua for the night. A cracking fish and chips meal at a craft beer bar was just what we needed as we prepare for a packed day tomorrow.
